Canisteo is one of the shabbiest towns I have ever lived in and there is no reason for it. Tractor trailers and other big trucks are allowed on non-business side streets and on Depot Street where water, sewage, and gas lines abound as well as on Green Street through a trailer park. Cats run all over the place and most are wild. Much could be done to beautify this little town. Ideas need to come forth in the hope of having our youth return after college and there is absolutely nothing for them to do here while growing up. This a "dead" town. And none of the people who hold office seem to care and they are exactly the ones who should be coming up with ideas on how to rebuild this town. In the 1800's this town was alive and lovely and it has absolutely degraded to a town that looks dirty and has nothing to offer anyone except a place to grow old and die. I have been here going on 6 years and this town is as stagnant as a polluted pond. On Depot St. the gas building is regularly letting off fumes that stink to high heavens and can't be healthy for us or the environment. There is no recycle pick up. Litter is all over. Side walks all warped or broken and with no curb. The parking lot on Main St should actually be a park. A swimming pool besides the lousy one at the school should be built similar to the one in Hornell. The one in the school is horrendous on family night- elbow to elbow- not a safe environment at all. There is a major hole near me that gets filled and soon, by traffic and weather, it returns to being a hole that no one ever misses. Stones are used on the side of the road on Depot Street and I can always count on finding them on my lawn. People let their dogs "go" on other peoples lawns and do not clean it afterward. Between this and the cats that means a lot of filth and disease...and angry homeowners. Recently someone moved in with 9 dogs. Nine. And they are not quiet animals I can assure you. There is a wildlife pond where wood and natural tree and grass clippings get shoved into it. Why? There are wood ducks, mink, otter and birds of all kinds there. It could be a lovely habitat refuge for people to visit. Some of the wood taken there is beautiful. I've seen cherry, oak, maple in huge cut up pieces that are just going to waste and they aren't even diseased or bug ridden. I don't understand the thought processes of some of the people in charge here. Have you sat on your seat so long that you are content with doing next to nothing? There should be fundraisers for our town, dances, dinners, raffles, penny socials,Easter parades showcasing an Easter bonnet contest with a Miss Canisteo Cottontail Queen and a Briar Rabbit King, there should be Christmas festivities with vendors, horse wagon/sleigh rides, carol singing,An we should have a town wide pumpkin carving, with venders who pay to participate, Lane's mulled cider, and any other fun activity to do. Have an All Hollow's Eve Masqued Ball after the lighting of the pumpkins, hay rides and vendors, all come and sell their wares for a price. We should be having something like Cohocton's Fall Foliage or Naples Grape Fest. But what do have? Crazy Daze and a weak parade because the planning is shabby. We should be rebuilding this little town up. Not letting it go to the cats and dogs and over-sized trucks crushing our resource pipes. Gee, it really makes me sick to see how people just sit on their kiester's and do nothing for a once beautiful town who is not even a shadow of a reflection of it's former loveliness. Truly a sad state of affairs. Delicia Ambrosino Resident for the time being
